Waiotapu Mudpot

Prev Button Next Button

The central part of the North Island is a huge geothermal region with active volcanoes, geysers, hot springs, boiling lakes, fumaroles, steam vents, and mudpots like this one bubbling away near Waiotapu just south of Rotorua. Some of the stars of the region are the active volcanoes, like Mt. Tongariro which last erupted in 2012, and Mt. Ngauruhoe which was most recently depicted as Mt. Doom in The Lord of the Rings films.
