Mitre Peak

Milford Sound, the final destination of the 33-mile Milford Track, one of New Zealand’s “Great Walks,” is a deep fjord coming about ten miles in from the Tasman Sea. We didn’t take the hike over the mountains, however, but drove in through the tunnel. The area gets some of the highest rainfall on earth, and the day we spent kayaking on the Sound was no exception. A little clearing the evening before our water sojourn gave us a brief view of the impressive Mitre Peak, so called because of its shape reminiscent of a bishop’s hat.
