At the head of the Eglinton Valley is the trail head for the Routeburn Track, one of New Zealand’s “Great Walks.” A few miles up this track in the mountains there is a branch heading even higher to Key Summit. Here we found a few small tarns, or mountain lakes, as well as some bogs. And when the cloud cover isn’t there, the views of the surrounding peaks are stunning. The day we climbed, however, was a more typical day with the mountain tops lost in the clouds.
