Sitka Spruce Forest

Just north of Lincoln City, Oregon, Cascade Head juts out into the Pacific Ocean. Much of the property on this spectacular headland was acquired by The Nature Conservancy, and a magnificent trail leads to high meadows through a magical rain forest of huge sitka spruce. With moss, lichens, mushrooms, wild flowers, oxalis like giant shamrocks, and rain, this was such a primeval forest that it conjured up images of hobbits, ents, orcs, goblins, elves, and other denizens of The Lord of the Rings. Did the producers ever even consider Oregon as a possible location for their film instead of New Zealand?
