A few blocks from my house in Medford, Massachusetts, is an old house which once was the Sarah Fuller Home for Little Children Who Cannot Hear. Founded in 1888 by Mr. and Mrs. Francis Brooks, a wealthy local family with a deaf daughter, the school lasted until 1925. Now a private home, we were invited to a political event at the house, and I was entranced by the amazing original front door. About two hundred years worth of paint was in the process of being scraped off for refinishing, but the colors and imagery thus revealed were fascinating to me.
