San Francisco has had a long tradition of political outspokenness, but this juxtaposition of streets in the Castro Valley neighborhood predated the 1959 revolution which brought Fidel Castro to power in Cuba. When his government turned to communism and aligned itself with the Soviet Union, this little corner of the City suddenly took on new meaning.
