Briones Hillside

The California hills have always been a refuge for me ever since I was a child. Wild mustard, exuberant in the May sunshine, covers this hillside in Briones Regional Park in the hills of Lafayette just east of the San Francisco Bay. We took a walk in these hills during a visit to see my father who was residing in a nearby assisted-living facility. The smells of the coyote bush and wild fennel combined with the prickly taste of the mustard helped me rise above the pain of seeing my aging father failing so quickly.
