Aoraki Over Pukaki

Towering over the other mountains and dominating the northern end of Lake Pukaki is 12,218 foot Mount Cook, or Aoraki, the cloud-piercer. It was on this peak, the tallest in New Zealand, that Sir Edmund Hillary trained for his historic ascent of Mt. Everest in 1953. We were told that it is somewhat rare to see Aoraki from top to bottom in the autumn. Our luck must have been very strong, for we got to view the full mountain on two separate days, albeit separated by a day of pretty heavy weather.
