Mussolini’s Bathhouse
Between the World Wars, Italy had control over Istria, and Pula was no exception. After Mussolini came to power in 1922, he began a process of investing in some of the outlying territories. Following in the “modernist” style of the day, this bath house in Pula is a prime example of the kind of architectural projects undertaken by Mussollini’s government. Stark, cold, uninviting, yet perversely monumental, this bath house has no beach attached to it, only a long concrete slope leading down to the waters of the Stoja bay. Crumbling and rusting now after years of dis-use under the Yugoslavian government, portions have been fenced off to protect anyone walking underneath.
