Above Corniglia

On a hike between two of the Italian Riviera Cinque Terre towns, from Corniglia to Manarola, we climbed steeply uphill through the terraces of grape vines and olive trees. The bright sun of the early autumn soon gave way to dark clouds, and by the time we reached Volastra, the “sister” village up the hill from Manarola, it started to rain and hail. Taking cover under the eaves of Volastra’s parish church, Nostra Signora della Salute, we waited until the sun had returned and we could continue our trek steeply down into Manarola.
