Seeing Double

Just over the crest of the Port Hills south of Christchurch, New Zealand, I came across something which caused a real double-take. Still jet-lagged after a long journey from LA and without much sleep, we were on a hike which turned out to be longer than we had originally anticipated. New flora was all around, new birds in the air, and here was a new animal I had never before encountered. Was I hallucinating? The two heads stayed stationary for quite a while looking at me as much as I was looking at them — or it. Was I so odd-looking to warrant so much study? Finally the two heads turned, went back to eating, and the two cows drifted apart.
