On the afternoon of May 20, 2012, as my father lay in a nearby hospital suffering from terminal pneumonia, the sun slowly slipped behind the moon for a near total eclipse. Above us, the leaves of towering trees rustled in the breeze as the light faded away. When only a sliver of the sun was visible, I noticed that the spots of light coming through the trees above were like little “camera obscura” lenses, each spot displaying an inverted image of the eclipse event in the western sky. Soon the sun reappeared, and my father’s health improved to the point that he could be moved to a nursing care facility.
