Horseshoe Bend

Just down river from the Glen Canyon Dam, the Colorado River makes a mighty loop, almost connecting up with itself. Thick layers of sandstone, laid down over millions of years, have been carved away by floods, wind, rain, ice, and the normal gentle flow of the Colorado. Over 1000 feet deep at this point, the chasm is quite stunning. The brilliance of the morning light flattened the contrast of the exposed escarpment’s shapes. Perhaps a late afternoon image would have had better lighting, but we had other places to go, slot canyons to explore, and we had to move on.
