Nestled in some hills just off the main road in Thames on the North Island of New Zealand is the Butterfly and Orchid Garden. Entering the warm tropical sheltered environment (read: greenhouse), I was transported back to Trinidad where I lived for a while in my 20s. One evening while living there, a giant blue morpho butterfly, with a wing-span of about six inches like this one, fluttered in one side of my house, flew through the living-room, and out the other side. I had the same experience with frogs in Trinidad, but the blue morpho butterflies were by far the most exquisite creatures I encountered there. So finding ourselves amongst blue morphos and other wonderful butterflies and moths in New Zealand, I was just transfixed.
