Trieste Night

Trieste, the Italian city at the northern reach of the Adriatic near the border with Slovenia, has a glorious but checkered history. It was part of the Republic of Venice until Napoleon defeated Venice and it became part of his empire. When Napoleon was defeated it became part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire for the next century. At the end of the First World War, it reverted to Italy. After World War II for a brief time of a few years it was its own republic, but then it rejoined Italy.

On a bike trip from Venice to Poreč in Croatia, we spent one night in Trieste where we admired the Austrian influence in its buildings, its wonderful harbor, its amazing funicular trolley, and its Roman amphitheater. One evening here was definitely not enough!
